A quick note on Dutch sounds
A handful of Dutch sounds don't exist in English. Learn these five and you'll already sound convincingly Dutch. Stress usually falls on the first syllable.
- g / ch
A throaty scrape from the back of the throat, like clearing your throat softly. As in "goedemorgen".
- ui
A tricky diphthong — round your lips as for "oo", then glide toward "ay". As in "huis".
- ij / ei
Identical sounds — somewhere between English "ay" and "eye". As in "wijn", "trein".
- oe
Pure "oo" as in "boot" (English "boot"). As in "goed", "boek".
- v / w
Softer than English. "v" is between v and f; "w" is closer to a soft English "v".
Hoi, ik ben Mink.
I'm a Dutch teacher based in the Netherlands. I built this course from the lessons I give in cafés, classrooms and living rooms — the Dutch you actually use when you order coffee, pay the bill, or chat with your neighbour.
